What is Short Track Speed Skating?

Short track speed skating is performed on a 111m oval on a regular sized ice arena. It originated in Canada in the 1880s when some speed skaters in Canada used to practice on the indoor ice hockey rink. As a result, indoor speed skating competitions were born. In 1988, short track speed skating was first listed as a winter Olympic sport in Calgary, and it was only in 1992 that the winter Olympics in Albertville became an official event.

It differs from other sports which only compare sports ability, the essence of short track speed skating is to test the tactical cooperation between people. Short track speed skating has a rich tactical system, It’s a general term for the individual or collective action taken to achieve a unified goal based on the characteristics of the project, the rules of the race and the changes of the playing field.

Short track speed skating was introduced to China in 1981, up to now, after more than 20 years of efforts, there are 23 elite athletes, 20 times to break the world record, and acquire 103 world championship. In successive Olympics, China won 7 gold , 10 silver,  7 copper, made outstanding contribution to the cause of China’s sports.
